Innovation in trustworthy video-based solutions for Active and Assisted Living (AAL)

STOCKHOLM: 2nd visuAAL Doctoral Seminar

Stockholm University hosted our 2nd Doctoral Seminar in April, where our early stage researchers presented the progress of their PhDs. It was very satisfying to see how they have progressed in recent months towards achieving the objectives of their research projects and the commitment and participation of the members of the supervisory committees, who actively contributed to the discussions and contributed to the multidisciplinary knowledge of the visuAAL project.

Siddharth Ravi, travelled  to Vancouver to present his paper "ODIN: An OmniDirectional INdoor Dataset Capture Activities of Daily Living From Multiple Synchronized Modalities" at the Workshop on Omnidirectional Computer Vision. The full text is available here.

Wiktor Mucha's work entitled "Human action recognition in egocentric perspective using 2D objects and hand poses" was presented online at CPVR 2023 during the Joint International 3rd Ego4D and 11th EPIC Workshop. The presentation is available here
Caterina Maidhof, presented at ICT4AWE in Prague, her work together with Sophia Otten, Wiktoria Wilkowksa, Julia Offermann and Martina Ziefle on reliance on assistive living technology and its acceptance in an overburdened healthcare system, where video-based AAL offers a good alternative to support people in need of help.

Our researcher Irene Ballester Campos presented a poster on "Interaction Design of a Toilet Assistance System for People with Dementia" in the Workgroup on Interactive Systems in Healthcare (WISH) at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systemsthe (CHI 2023). Work with Markus Gall & Martin Kampel.
LEGAL SOLUTIONS FOR A DIGITAL WORLD
Maksymilian Kuźmicz participated in the International Conference on Computer Ethics: Philosophical Enquiry 2023 @CSEP1 where he analysed the European Charter of Digital Rights in the context of AI and the problem of values in human-computer interactions and its ethical dimensions. Also, he talked at the Illinois Institute of Technology about this topic in the global context, seeking legal solutions to govern our digital world.

visuAAL is an Innovative Training Network that brings together 5 beneficiaries and 14 partner organizations from Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
At Trinity College Dublin, in Ireland, Dr. John Dinsmore is the principal investigator in visuAAL, through the Trinity Centre for Health Practice and Innovation, School of Nursing and Midwifery.

At the Austrian university TU Wien, research is being carried out on some of the technological aspects of visuAAL. This work is carried out in the Computer Vision Lab where Dr. Martin Kampel is the main researcher involved in our project.
The aim of visuAAL is to bridge the knowledge gap between users’ requirements and the appropriate and secure use of video-based AAL technologies to deliver effective and supportive care to older adults managing their health and wellbeing
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 861091.
